IRP Plate FAQs

Get answers to your most pressing questions about IRP Plates.

What is an IRP plate and who needs one?

An IRP (International Registration Plan) plate allows commercial vehicles to operate across multiple U.S. states and Canadian provinces under one registration. It distributes registration fees based on miles driven in each jurisdiction. Carriers engaged in interstate travel with qualifying vehicles must have IRP plates.

Vehicles over 26,000 pounds, or those with three or more axles, used in interstate commerce must register under IRP. Even lighter vehicles must register if they cross state lines regularly for business.

IRP plates must be renewed annually before the expiration date assigned to your account. Renewal deadlines vary based on your fleet’s registration schedule. Late renewals can lead to penalties or temporary loss of operating privileges.

IRP plates can be transferred if your original unit is sold, damaged, or taken out of service. We handle the required paperwork to move plates. Temporary permits can also be issued to keep your fleet moving during the process.

We can help replace lost, stolen, or damaged plates promptly. You’ll need to provide supporting documents, and we’ll work with the state to issue a new plate. Temporary plates may also be provided to avoid service disruption.
